Parent-Infant Psychotherapy

Understanding Parent-Infant Psychotherapy

Parent-infant psychotherapy is a unique approach to helping parents and their infants build a stronger relationship and overcome early life challenges. This form of therapy recognises that the bond between a parent and an infant is profound and deeply influential for both parties.

Building Secure Attachments

The primary goal of parent-infant psychotherapy is to create secure attachments between parents and their babies. Secure attachments lay the foundation for your baby’s future relationships, shape their view of the world, and influence their emotional and psychological development.

Observation and Reflection

Our sessions will involve observing your baby and their interactions with you. By paying close attention to your baby’s behaviours, feelings, and cues, we can gain a deep understanding of their emotional needs. Reflecting on these observations together, we can explore ways to enhance your connection with your baby and strengthen your parental confidence.

Under Fives - Younger Children

Younger children often communicate through their behaviours and might not yet have the ability to manage their emotions. This can be a source of stress and upset for parents, which interferes with the ability to set boundaries and understand powerful emotions. Having a space to reflect on how children behave and the impact it has on parents helps improve communication and enhances the enjoyment within the relationship.

Addressing Difficulties and Distress

When pregnant or after the birth of a baby there is a shared expectations that parents should be happy and able to get on with their relationship with their infant. The reality is that as parents we can have mixed or at times negative feelings that we are too scared to talk about and we rather keep them hidden. Having a safe space to talk about them will bring some relief and better understanding of where they might be coming from.
