Understanding Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy

Child and adolescent psychotherapy is a specialised area of therapy focusing on the unique challenges and developmental stages of children and teenagers. By using age-appropriate techniques, we can help them express their feelings, cope with difficulties, and strengthen their mental and emotional wellbeing.

Acknowledging the Struggle

Children and teenagers can encounter numerous hurdles as they grow, from navigating school pressure to grappling with peer relationships, or dealing with complex emotions. Understanding these struggles is the first step towards helping them. It’s crucial to recognise that their feelings are valid and deserve attention and care.

A Safe Space to Express and Explore

My role as a child and adolescent psychotherapist is to provide a safe, non-judgmental space where your child can freely express their thoughts and feelings. Using a combination of play, talk, and creative therapies, we can explore their emotions, fears, hopes, and dreams at their own pace.

Parental Involvement

Any assessment of the child/young person difficulties starts with an initial consultation with the parents only.

Parental involvement when appropriate is crucial to the positive outcome of therapy. How parents respond to their child’s difficulties is as important as the child/young person receiving therapeutic help. It might not be always appropriate to see the parents of the child in treatment, in order to maintain confidentiality, but I would recommend someone else if appropriate.

Family involvement can often play a significant role in child and adolescent psychotherapy. By fostering a supportive and understanding environment at home, you can contribute to your child’s healing process. I’m here to work collaboratively with you, providing guidance and support when needed.
